I went there this past spring to get three 2 cubit foot bags of garden soil. Those things are heavy. They're even heavier if they've been left out in the rain, which they had this particular day. Not a soul was around to help in the outdoor garden area, so I had to drag one of those huge carts over and heft the bags onto it myself, then drag it inside to the cashier. It just about did me in for gardening the rest of the day.
After I paid, I asked the cashier to page someone to load my car. She did. No one came. I asked again. She paged again- over and over for 15 minutes. Finally, this little old man came out to "help" me. I didn't have the heart to make HIM lift those bags alone, so I helped him. I was pissed and exhausted from what should have been a brief errand.
The more I thought about it, the madder I got, so I called their corporate offices in Georgia to complain. A very nice lady took my call and seemed truly appalled by my experience. She sent me a $25 gift card to make up for it and said she'd be forwarding my complaint to the store manager here. Now that was pretty awesome since I'd spent less than $25 in the first place. What wasn't awesome about it, though, was the thought of going back to a store with such wretched customer service.
I did go back. I mean, I'm not gonna look a $25 gift card in the mouth, right? And apparently my complaint got through, because now they have a goon stationed in the garden center to help people lift things. A sullen, reluctant goon. I won't be going back unless absolutely necessary. The little trowel I got on that trip broke already, but it's not worth it to me to put up with their crap for a $5 shovel.
The moral of the story is this, kids: If you go to Home Depot and your service is anything less than desirable, CALL. Get the gift card. Keep the pressure on. Here's the info:
